The Fallingstar x Grimaud Collection

The Fallingstar x Grimaud Collection

We’re thrilled to announce our collaboration Fallingstar x Grimaud Maître Cartier, the legendary French card maker founded in 1848. Known for their exquisite craftsmanship and storied history, Grimaud has long celebrated the intersection of artistry and symbolism — values that resonate deeply with us at Fallingstar.

Together, we’ve reimagined the timeless beauty of Grimaud’s tarot and playing card motifs into a new wallpaper collection that bridges centuries of design. Every pattern tells a story — from intricate linework inspired by 19th-century engraving to bold, modern interpretations that bring the magic of old-world craftsmanship into the present.

When Cards Met Wallpaper

Before wallpaper became industrially produced, artisans known as dominotiers created papiers dominotés—decorative sheets printed from carved wooden blocks and hand-colored with natural pigments. Popular from the 16th to 18th centuries, these designs adorned books, boxes, furniture, and occasionally the backs of playing cards, revealing an early link between decorative paper and cardmaking.

A century later, Zuber & Cie in Alsace transformed this tradition through roller-printing innovations that bridged art and industry, producing ornate papers for both wallpaper and playing cards and exporting them across Europe. Though no direct records show Grimaud sourcing from Zuber, parallels in their techniques and artistry suggest a shared lineage of precision printing and pattern repetition. Our collaboration with Grimaud revives this legacy—reconnecting centuries of craftsmanship where paper becomes both medium and muse.
